Mickey Dastinz: “MASAKA Is About Connection, Music, and Community.”

At the magical setting of Cova Santa, we sat down with Mickey Dastinz to celebrate the closing of his MASAKA’s second season in Ibiza. What began as a vision rooted in Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean culture has grown into one of the island’s most powerful experiences, blending music, spirituality, and community. In this interview, Mickey shares why Cova Santa is the true home of MASAKA, the unforgettable moments that moved people to tears, and how the project looks to the future — creating new shows, uniting new tribes, and giving back through charity initiatives in Africa.

Interview With Mickey Dastinz:

Hi Mickey, thank you for inviting us to today’s show here at Cova Santa. It’s a closing of MASAKA, so are you excited? How do you feel about it?

Yes, I’m very excited. Ibiza is pure magic and today is the most important day here. Ibiza is truly unique in the world. With Masaka, we’re celebrating two years of residency on the island, and it’s always an amazing party.

Why did you choose Cova Santa in Ibiza as the home for MASAKA?

Cova Santa is simply one of the most authentic places on the island. Above all, it represents the spiritual and musical heart of Ibiza. People recognize it as something truly special because it’s unique here.

MASAKA is more than just music – it’s a full experience. What inspired you to create it and was it challenging?

I’m originally from the Dominican Republic, with a mix of Afro-Latin and Afro-Caribbean culture. When I came to Europe, I reached a moment where I felt I had to create music – a spiritual connection with my African ancestors, who are my roots. I was born into the Tahini tribe, and from a very young age, I felt a deep connection with the drums.

How would you describe the 2025 season? What was the absolute highlight or most unforgettable moment for you?

The best moments of Masaka are right here at Cova Santa, where we connected with so many people. Above all, there were moments when people were moved to tears – truly crying – because the vibe was so beautiful. Part of that comes from the fact that many of the artists are of African heritage, bringing a very special and powerful energy.

Afro house is growing rapidly worldwide – how do you see its future, and how do you want to contribute to it?

For the future, we are mainly focused on creating new shows and new tribes to integrate. Most importantly, we want to build something meaningful through charity – bringing gifts and support to Africa. We believe the real future lies in helping the younger generations, and that’s a big part of what we want to create, alongside growing as a collective

What are your plans for the winter? Any special events, destinations, or collaborations in the works?

For this winter, we’re active in around 17–18 countries. We already work in Poland, Dubai – where we spent the season – as well as in Romania, Madrid, Barcelona, and Marbella

Do you have any message for Cova Santa?

I feel the music today; it’s a very special day. This club represents my soul, and above all, it’s about the connection and being able to connect so deeply with both – the artists and the audience. For me, it’s truly special. Thank you.
