With releases on Get Physical, Defected, Toolroom and more, Flashmob Records boss Flashmob continues to evolve his sound, showcasing a dynamic blend of contemporary beats and classic House vibes. We caught up with him for 7 Questions, talking about his latest track “By My Side”, the DJs he rates, his biggest red flags behind the decks, and why sometimes you simply need to know when it’s time to go home.
Interview With Flashmob:
What was the first thing that came to your mind when you finished “By My Side”?
Definitely that it was something different, that I was really happy about, because the emotions are definitely right. From day one, I started playing it, so it was really great to see how this little, slightly different kind of sound fitted into my DJ set. And yeah, positive vibes.
Why A-Trak & Friends, and why was this label perfect for the song?
I recently did a remix for a track called “Bump” by Tony Romera, Mike Dunn and The Brothers Macklovitch, which are A-Trak and his brother. I don’t know, as with a lot of things in life, timing is essential. And I had this track and thought that A-Trak is you know, being such a legend and being in the game for such a long time, being American, I thought it would be something that he would understand. And he did.
Which DJ would you love to hear play “By My Side”?
Definitely Franky Rizardo. In terms of groove, it’s probably slightly different, but the energy could be right for one of those big festivals he plays in a particular moment.
Who is the most criminally underrated DJ on the planet?
Well, for me, one of the best DJs and producers on the planet is Radio Slave. He does extremely well and he’s had an extremely long career, and he’s still one of the most popular DJs out there. I mean, Rekids is probably the third house label on the planet, so I think that he should be absolutely top of the chain. I think he’s one of the GOATs for me personally.
What’s the biggest “I should probably go home” moment after a gig?
Well, South America is probably a place where I should always go home after a gig, because I play long sets and the energy and the adrenaline I have in my body are just a different level now. So when I finish, yeah, you should probably go home. So I vote for South America. That light that you have at 6–7 a.m. when you finish… that’s trouble. Go home.
What’s your biggest DJ red flag?
Not moving to the rhythm of the music. Having an attitude. Getting too involved. You dance with the crowd, you can’t dance alone. It’s something for two people, not one. One is the crowd and one is you. So if it’s only about you and you’re getting too carried away, that’s, for me, a red flag.
What’s one thing about you that we would never guess?
This is a hard one because I don’t really know how I come across, so that’s a pretty nasty question. So I can be honest to the point of coming across maybe sometimes rude. So yeah, I’m not going to answer that question, am I? Thank you.
